How to become a Social Media Manager: the internship

My desire was to become a Social Media Manager and at the same time increase my professionalism in writing texts for the web. I quit my job indefinitely to pursue this dream and I did it.

What did it cost me? Much. Leaving aside the salary issue, since I went from a full one to one of just 400 euros a month, this period cost me a lot of patience and a lot of good humor.

I’ve always been a “I want everything now”, but this job has made me realize that this is not the case. The internship put a brake on me, it made me understand that there are times, that you will never be able to do everything right right away, but that it takes time.

At the end of the six-month internship I was at home, without a job, you can understand why I am talking about a loss of good humor.

My advice to you

The magic word that will stop this seemingly discouraging period is “tenacity”.

Without tenacity and determination you will never be able to become a Social Media Manager , a bit like in all jobs. You can’t expect to become a bricklayer after the first two weeks of work, nor a web professional just by attending online courses and not practicing for months.

The internship, especially if done in a web agency, allows you to touch tools that, on your own, you would never have had the opportunity to access, due to their costs. But not only that, you can also grow thanks to the comparison with colleagues and the indications of the tutor.

How to become a Social Media Manager: working in the company

After being unemployed for almost six months, I found a job at a company in Venice, as a Copywriter and Social Media Specialist : a dream.

The experience in the company was very useful to me for two reasons:

  • I was able to hone my skills in social media marketing and copywriting, working on a real brand, facing cases that I had never seen before
  • I understood what I wanted to do in life: the social media manager and freelance copywriter

In the company I started managing several Facebook pages , coordinating the work with graphic designers and those who, besides me, were in charge writing texts for the company magazine. I learned what it means to take advantage of a editorial plan for social networks and to manage dark campaigns on Facebook and the sponsorships of simple posts.

But after nearly two years, I felt it was time to take the leap: freelance.

My advice to you

Being able to enter a company, filling the role you had hoped for, is priceless. If the company invests in communication in a thoughtful way, understanding its importance, and in your training, your skills will certainly make the leap in quality.

Take advantage of this work experience to consolidate what you have learned so far, putting it into practice in the growth of the company you are part of.

How to become a Social Media Manager: courses and masters

Since I approached the world of social media, I have never stopped training, not even now that I work on my own.

On the web you will find a million online courses to become a Social Media Manager, I have chosen some that I propose below.

Digital Coach

I’m starting from the last course I did: Facebook Ads with Digital Coach . I was looking for a course that would elucidate me things about Facebook campaigns, in particular the management and budgeting of a campaign, because very often my clients ask me this, not knowing what death to die of.

When I started I didn’t do Facebook campaigns except for myself, then over time my customers started asking me for this service too and I had to catch up. I didn’t want to rely solely on my knowledge, but to give them a complete and reliable service.

Digital Coach offers three types of use of the course: on demand, online or in the classroom. Personally I chose the on demand type, not because I don’t like classroom courses, but because time is always short and you have to use it as you can.

Course price: starting from 189 euros (7 hours of online training)

Studio Samo

I met Studio Samo when I was at the beginning of my career, I did two courses with them:

  • Seo Base
  • Social Media Marketing

They were one weekend each, so don’t think about going out with some amazing notions, but for sure they serve for a general flounder, if you don’t have the time to lose yourself reading a few hundred blogs, mostly in English.

Course price: the formula I chose no longer exists, but you can find the two courses at 99 euros + VAT for Facebook Marketing Base and the complete SEO course at 147 euros + VAT.

Veneto Training

This is a reality that operates only locally in the Veneto region, with which I did a generic course on Web Marketing, just before starting my own business.

I needed the tools to be able to launch my business on the web and I must say that it was a really good course, even if a lot of information already belonged to my knowledge base.

The course is exclusively in the classroom.

Course price: around 1000 euros (once a week for about a month and a half, 6 hours lessons)

Veronica Gentili

With Veronica Gentili, Facebook Marketing expert, I took a course called Facebook Marketing Focus.

Although it is defined for experts, if you are already familiar with Business Manager and campaigns, this course is too little advanced for you. If, on the other hand, you are at the very beginning, you have only started campaigning on Facebook, this course is good for consolidating what you already know and exploring new topics.

The course runs through webinars, which you can review at a later time in case you can’t attend.

Course price: 450 euros (4 intensive webinars of 1:30 h)

Ninja Marketing

I bet you already know her.

At your expense, you will understand that training is essential to always provide a punctual and satisfying service. During the first year as a freelance I invested little in my training (with the exception of the Course with Digital Coach ), I first had to be able to understand how to manage my new life as a freelancer.

During the second year, however, I decided to take the Ninja Academy’s Master of Social Media Marketing to make a qualitative leap. This is perhaps the most useful course I have ever attended, even if in my opinion it addresses the topic of social media marketing without taking too much into account the figure of the freelance social media manager.

Let me explain.

Excellent explanations, useful slides, many ideas and techniques are provided to learn the trade, but tools are proposed (for example) that only a marketing department or an agency could afford and freelancers (initially poor in canna) is not considered that much.

Do I recommend it? Of course, having a broad vision of what the world of social media marketing is is certainly the first step to understanding how to become a competent and successful social media manager, but with the knowledge that many of the things you will learn you will not be able to apply them. for lack of budget.

Course price: 1300 euro + VAT

Easygram: my online Instagram course

Lastly, I’ll tell you about the Instagram course which, after two and a half years from the opening of the VAT number, I created everything myself.

As you well know, Instagram is currently the social network that records by far the highest rate of engagement as well as conversion (and therefore sales), so a social media manager must know how to use it to its fullest potential.

Easygram is a course in which I explain everything I have learned over the years as a social media manager (both as an employee and as a freelance professional) that you can follow at any time because it is entirely online.

At the course: 124 euros, but for you who are reading this article, I have reserved a 20% discount on the total!

Well, now I just have to wish you good luck for your new adventure, so then you will be the one to tell me the story of how you became a social media manager!
