The WhatsApp instant messaging service has both web and desktop apps, offering another way to make it as easy as possible to keep up to date with all your WhatsApp messages during the day.
The web version and desktop app for macOS and Windows work more or less the same way and are very similar to the WhatsApp smartphone app.
To download the WhatsApp desktop app, go to whatsapp.com/download from the desktop browser and press download . Alternatively, if you don’t want to download, go to the web-based version at web.whatsapp.com.
Here’s a quick guide to getting the most out of them.
What are these apps?
The WhatsApp Web and Desktop Apps are an extension of your smartphone. They mirror all the conversations and messages you have on the WhatsApp app on your phone and allow you to see and reply to them all on your PC or Mac using your computer keyboard instead of your smartphone keyboard.
You can see exactly what is happening in your WhatsApp while you are working on a Word document or replying to an email, without having to take your smartphone out of your pocket.
How do they work?
Apps initially require you to scan a QR code using your mobile phone to access messages and conversations. Once this is done, you can put your phone in your desk drawer or pocket and forget about it.
The app will display all your conversations, deliver new messages, and allow you to start new chats or search current conversations. . You’ll also have access to your profile, along with some basic settings and archived chats.
These apps don’t offer exactly the same features as the smartphone app when it comes to settings, but replying to messages and starting new chats is pretty much the same, just a little bit easier and faster as you have a bigger display and a better keyboard.
How to use them?
After opening the app on your PC or Mac, scan the QR code that appears on your computer screen using your smartphone.
To do this on iPhone, open the WhatsApp app on your device, go to “ Settings ” then “ WhatsApp Web / Desktop ”and the box will appear ready to scan your desktop screen. On Android, open the WhatsApp app, go to the three dots in the top right corner and tap WhatsApp Web .
Messages and conversations will then be displayed on your computer screen. You can change the size of the window and minimize it if you want. On Mac, any new messages will appear in top right of the display , as happens with other applications such as Mail. On Windows, they will appear on the bottom right and then filtered in the Notification Center .
To view your profile, change your status, or change your profile picture, click on your image at the top of the desktop app. Next to your image is the symbol that will allow you to start a new chat, while the small arrow next to the new chat symbol will bring up a drop-down menu, including Log Out .
Management of chats and groups
The drop-down menu is also where you will find your archived chats, another way to access your profile and your status, as well as the option to create a new group. Within this menu you will also find settings , which consist of access to any blocked contacts and notification preferences, including the activation or deactivation of the audio, as well as the choice whether to show or not previews.
Hovering your mouse over each individual chat on the main screen will also display a small arrow for that particular chat, giving you a couple more options. You can archive a chat, deactivate it, delete it or mark it as unread.
There are also more options in each individual chat. At the top left of a given chat, you will see the contact’s name and also last accessed (if it has this feature enabled). At the top right, there is a search symbol, along with another small arrow that brings up another drop-down menu.
Within this menu, you can select the messages inside chat, mute the chat, clear and delete it, as well as see the contact information for that person. You can also click on the bar at the top of the chat and you will have the option to delete the chat, activate disappearing messages and see contact information.
Emojis are also available on the WhatsApp desktop app. You will find them in the same place you would find them on the smartphone app, on the side of the box where you type a new message. The paperclip symbol for attaching any support file can also be found here.
